Online Tools Can Help You Select Color

If you’re like many folks you might have trouble visualizing designs and color schemes.  Let’s say that you really love the colors in the blanket you brought back from Mexico or a photo you saw in a magazine. But you’re really not sure which colors should be main features or accents or what the “feel” of your finished project will be.

There are plenty of tools that are available to you. The Painting and Decorating Contractors of America has several articles on color psychology, color meaning and symbolism.  You can read these articles by clicking on this link: http://www.pdca.org/consumers/colorhelp.htm.

The Rohm and Haas Paint Quality Institute has a number of resources on color and design at http://www.paintquality.com/color/index.html , including its “Color Designer,” a digital tool which allows you to experiment with color inside sample home interiors.

Several paint manufacturers have websites that allow you to paint both interiors and exteriors.  Sherwin Williams offers its “Color Visualizer ”, (which allows you to experiment with sample interiors and exteriors.

Benjamin Moore has a “Personal Color Viewer ”. /  It allows you to “paint” a sample room or exterior or your own photographs via upload.  The Benjamin Moore site has booth commercial building and residential sample images.  Sherwin Williams’ site offers only residential “canvases” on which to test your color choices.

Benjamin Moore also has a “Virtual Fan Deck ” of paint colors. The Virtual Fan Deck is a fun, easy, and exciting way to view paint colors before buying.

Using online tools will help you to refine your vision for your home or building. Keep in mind that the colors you see on your computer monitor or print out on your printer are only a general indication of color choice, as monitors and printers will vary. Once you’ve selected a color online, let your painting contractor help you in making a good match. If you’ve got an “inspiration piece” (that Mexican blanket, for example), paint stores can actually use computer scanning to match the color components and mix your paint
