Small Companies: Finalists Best Places to Work

St. Louis Business Journal

Thomas Industrial Coatings Inc.

At Thomas Industrial Coatings, there might be no better example of teamwork in practice than the annual bonuses. Every employee receives the same flat amount regardless of title or job.

“This way it is in the best interest of every employee — from entry level to the top — to work hard to make sure the company is successful,” said Ross Boyd, purchasing and logistics manager.

Senior Project Manager Dane McGraw noted management’s openness to employee feedback. He and co-worker Don McComack suggested to owner Don Thomas that the company could more effectively use Microsoft Outlook for tracking schedules.

“It’s a midsized company that has a family-owned feel,” McGraw said. “No matter what level you’re on, the owner cares what you think.”

The Pevely, Mo.-based company specializes in applying and removing concrete and industrial coatings on bridges, buildings and other structures. It has 22 full-time employees and employs about 230 workers during peak seasons.

Perks:

• The company has numerous employee get-togethers such as barbecues and holiday parties. Employees note that many friendships formed at work carry over outside the workplace.

Put Your Walls on a Diet!

By Debbie Zimmer with permission of  The Paint Quality Institute

Did you know that paint color can actually alter the dimensions of a room? Well, it can’t literally do that. But it can alter how the dimensions are perceived, which is the next best thing. By taking a cue from fashion, your living space can be viewed as larger or smaller, taller or shorter.

A light-colored paint will make a small room appear bigger, for instance. And darker shades will make a large room seem much more intimate. These types of paint-induced optical illusions can be used with excellent results in almost any space.

Tips and Advice - Mind if I cut in

With permission of  Master Painters Institute in Vancouver Canada

There are many books in circulation that try to explain how to paint to a wide range of people. There's a wealth of information on tools, materials and styles but very little is written about 'cutting-in'—the technique for painting into edges, corners, and surface borders.

Proper cutting-in is essential to properly painted trim, windows, frames, base boards, doorframes, or graphic lines. In fact, cutting-in is one way professionals evaluate a tradesperson—how neat and precise the cut-in work is carried out, the size and type of brush used, the production rate, etc.  It's unlikely that a painter would be considered a good tradesperson if taping or shielding was required to produce a pleasing finished product.

Solving Surface Preparation Problems: A Review of 5 Projects

By Joe Schuster with permission of  PWC: Painting & Wallcovering Contractor

Surface preparation, as any painting contractor will tell you, is perhaps the most important part of any job: get it right, and the coating work is easier; get it wrong, and you may have wasted all the time and money it took to get the coating on the surface.

In most cases, how to clean and prepare a surface is a slam dunk decision.

“I’d say that in 90 percent of our jobs, we’re going to end up using a pretty standard method of surface cleaning and prep,” said Matt Terrell of  Atlanta-based Goodman Decorating, which marks 80 years of business this year focusing on commercial and industrial work throughout the southeast and eastern seaboard and as far away as areas of the Caribbean. “For most jobs, it’s a matter of sanding and water.”
